Underground gold rush and decarbonisation power the next generation of mining trucks

Going greener and deeper below the soil are the key trends that suppliers of WA mining’s biggest toys are honing their sights on. Showcasing a Caterpillar AD63 truck outside the Diggers & Dealers Forum in Kalgoorlie, the boss of WesTrac says the booming underground mining market is helping guiding the creation of the newest Caterpillar vehicles. “Anyone looking to do underground hard rock, whether that be gold or some of the battery minerals and the like, but there’s a lot of interest in gold (particularly) and increasing,” Jarvas Croome told The West Australian. As WA gold producers like Northern Star Resources, Westgold Resources and Regis Resources exhaust open pit deposits there has been a growing push to take advantage of the high gold price to push below surface. “We look into our underground with gold, just because the depth of operations, there are some surface mines but there’s a lot of opportunity deeper,” Mr Croome, whose WesTrac is a Caterpillar dealer, said. “Underground has pros and cons, though, it’s not cheap. But, there’s definitely opportunities in underground for gold in an area like Kalgoorlie where there’s such a prolific set of gold seams and gold deposits.” He also points to a growing need for miners to reduce their environmental footprint as another key theme driving customer demand. Across the other side of Kalgoorlie, Clayton Franklin’s Electric Power Conversions Australia has retrofitted a Caterpillar 777D truck to it full battery electric. Mr Franklin says there has been considerable industry interest in the electric conversion of the 100-ton payload truck, given it’s the most commonly used truck model in WA across all commodities. “When you look at trucks, which is where we target, that’s where the bulk of your carbon emissions are, outside of power generation,” he said. “If you look at the mine, up to 50 per cent (of emissions) is all These trucks, all these mobile machines running around. So trucks is the number one thing to try and electrify first. “It’s not all about saving the environment for our miners, a lot of it is around cost reduction.” The retrofitted Caterpillar truck will start on-site performance trials later this month and EPCA is partnering with WA-based truck tray provider Austin Engineering for bespoke trays tto optimise operations at different commodities. For example, hauling spodumene from lithium mines requires a more durable tray floor than would be the case with an iron ore operation because the ore is harder. Mr Croome says miners are targeting other ways of reducing their energy footprint beyond pure electric batteries and it is something equipment providers need to cater for — like via Caterpillar’s MineStar technology. “A lot of customers are focused on using, for example, autonomy, looking at how energy is consumed on the mine site,” he said. “(Autonomy) is used for remote operations, used for some of the technology like MineStarto monitor how fuel is being consumed, optimise their production cycles, making sure they get payload right,” he said. “Every ton you move for each litre of diesel consumed (saved) all helps you from your overall ESG.” Seven Group Holdings, a major shareholder in Seven West Media, the publisher of The West Australian, owns WesTrac.
