Gardens of WA: The community garden in Perth where everything is edible

If you’ve ever held a seed in your hand, tossed it onto a patch of bare earth and watched as new green shoots appeared, you’ll know the wonder of seeing something materialise, seemingly, out of nothing. I wonder if this is what makes gardening so uniquely rewarding, and what makes community gardens places of such generosity and warmth. It’s as though everyone feels they have been let in on a secret, a life hack that allows wonderful things to coalesce out of the ether. Hilton Harvest is one of these places: a place that is much more than a patch of earth with some plants in it. “There was nothing here before, just some gum trees,” Britta Mathews tells me, standing in front of the Hilton Harvest community garden. Behind her, a wood and metal fence made from spiralling mattress springs encloses the veggie patch. Off to one side is a chicken coop built from tyres and clay; to the other, a greenhouse filled with volunteers who are potting up seedlings for sale. A long table is covered with flowers and remnants of the volunteers’ morning tea. “This is one of the few places that has a nursery that you can volunteer at,” says Carolyn Lilley, treasurer of Hilton Harvest. “It’s a very unique place in that sense.” Britta and Carolyn lead me into the greenhouse, where Heidi Halter, a local horticulturalist, is overseeing the sowing of seeds. “It’s wonderful,” Heidi beams, “all abilities and ages are welcome. We have the community working in here, for the community, and it’s the community who can then purchase the plants.” The greenhouse shelves are filled with plants — tray after tray of tiny seedlings, and big pots of sugarcane, raspberries and dragon fruit cuttings taking root. “It’s all edibles,” Heidi explains. “The flowers are edible too. Lots of people give us old plants they don’t want — berry canes, dragon fruit, unwanted edibles — we take them and propagate everything. It’s fabulous because everything is a gift.” The genius behind the nursery is that everyone is welcome to help out. It means that beginner gardeners (who might be intimidated to start growing from seed) have the opportunity to learn from other members; to grow their confidence while also contributing to the garden. “Every volunteer comes with their own skills and experience, it’s a creative environment,” Heidi says. As well as the nursery, there is a membership program (community members rent garden beds to grow their own veggies and flowers), a nature playgroup on Tuesday mornings, and on Wednesdays, there is Buds and Blooms. “It’s an intergenerational nature play and gardening group,” Britta explains. “It’s been running for 10 years. The idea is to build community. We have older people coming along to do things with younger people.” Heidi adds: “We get lots of grandparents. People really want to connect, you know, they want to be part of something.” Hilton harvest turns 15 this year. If you’d like to visit, pop by on September 14 between 9am and midday.
