Metal cladding not only provides a bold style statement to a build, it also has many installation and maintenance benefits.

BGC Development Architect James Edwards said metal cladding was gaining popularity as a construction method, however in comparison to aluminium composite sheets, it was not as widely used due to its high cost.

“People are looking for alternative construction methodologies and materials to use metal cladding, as well as ways to use it in combination with other materials,” he said.

“Different ways to use metal cladding are becoming more popular, especially with screening and louvres.”

Mr Edwards said some benefits which were influencing the popularity of metal cladding included the robustness and aesthetics of the material.

“It should be installed anywhere other lightweight forms of construction are used, for example, as an alternative to timber or compressed sheet,” he said.

“Metal cladding embraces an industrial, city sensibility whilst, in the Australian context, it also references a long tradition of rural applications.

“It can be hot to touch in summer, so some thought needs to be put into its tactile application.”

While there are certain styles of homes which would benefit from metal cladding the most, it can suit a range of designs, according to Mr Edwards.

“Vernacular-designed houses suit metal cladding best,” he said. “For example, houses designed for their context, as opposed to a particular regional style imported – like Hamptons or French provincial.

“Different colours and profiles work with a vast breadth of homes. From the traditional farm and cottage homes with a corrugated profile, to sharp modern designs using matte finishes and broad flat profiles.”

Mr Edwards said before applying metal cladding to your build, consider the environment and how suitable it would be for the build, as well as remembering the impact metal cladding could have.

“Don’t just apply superficially – make sure it is integrated in the overall design and aesthetic you are seeking,” he said.

“Consider and compare metal cladding with other building material and not always in isolation.

“It can be bold and striking and last a long time, so know it’s there for the long term.”
