Lake Seppings Bird Hide rebuilt three months after original destroyed by fire

Three months after it was destroyed by a suspected arson attack, a cherished bird-watching site has been rebuilt. The City of Albany announced the reopening of the reconstructed Lake Seppings bird hide on Wednesday, with design changes to promote bird watching among people of all ages and abilities. The new hide features various lookout heights to accommodate adults, children and wheelchair users, seating with handrails and a reconstituted fibreglass material path that provides a flat and stable surface for wheelchair users and people with walking aids. City of Albany reserves manager Jacqui Freeman said it was important to be inclusive with the new design. “Rebuilding the Lake Seppings bird hide with enhanced accessibility demonstrates our commitment to inclusivity and providing equal access to Albany’s natural attractions,” she said. “This project reflects the city’s dedication to creating spaces where everyone, regardless of their physical abilities, can connect with nature and enjoy the beauty of our local wildlife. “It’s about fostering a sense of belonging and ensuring that our community’s natural treasures are accessible and enjoyed by all.” The original bird hide was burnt down on April 11 in what the city believes was a deliberate attack. Two firefighting crews were called to the fire about 8.10am and quickly extinguished the fire but could not save the structure, which was believed to have been there since the late 1990s.
