A new boating club has been established in Denmark with waves to be made at two events this weekend.

With a vision of building two wooden St Ayles skiffs and encouraging community participation in rowing, the Denmark Community Rowing Association was formed just a few months ago.

The club aims to bring together a group of volunteers to build the boats which will then be used to explore the waters around Denmark.

The St Ayles skiff is a four-person rowing boat that originated in Scotland and has gradually swept across the world.

Events will be held from 10am this Saturday at the river mouth boat ramp in Denmark and on Sunday at the Denmark Classic Boat Show at Berridge Park.

The public will be given a chance to see a St Ayles skiff up close.

“We’ll have the Skiffs coming down from Perth and Augusta and we’ll give the people who’ve come along to the meeting the opportunity to have a row in the Skiffs,” association president David Cliff said.

“And then we’re having the boat show and part of that is to demonstrate to the general public the St Ayles skiff as well as our classic boats.”

Mr Cliff said the team wanted to build an inclusive and lasting club.

“There’s a huge amount of community spirit that can be built with these boats and that’s what we’re looking for,” he said.

“The idea is that coastal communities build these boats where they have ideal waterways like the Wilson Inlet to row them.”
