Shire trainee Jett Higgins has claimed two awards from WA’s Department of Communities.

As part of the Shire of Augusta-Margaret River-backed Solid Futures Aboriginal Traineeship Program, Mr Higgins received honours from Premier Mark McGowan in the Community Spirit and Regional Training Achiever categories earlier this month.

The 18-year-old was a regular presence at the Shire’s Recreation Centre while studying a Certificate III in Government.

“I’ve been placed in different departments so I can experience them,” Mr Higgins said.

“I enjoyed organising the (recent) 3x3 basketball competition. There was catering and a good turnout of 30 people.

“At the library, I use the 3D printer to make prizes for the Reading Rabbits program. I enjoy all the programs I do with kids.”

Next up was more work with the Shire’s planning and development team to learn more about their role within the shire.

My Higgins said it was “deadly” to get his awards from the Premier during a ceremony held at WA Museum Boola Bardip.

“The library will miss him when he moves on to discover the world of planning and development where we look forward to seeing Jett unearth more of his many skills,” Shire corporate and community services director James Shepherd said.

“Jett’s contribution is proof that everyone has something to offer working in local government where we provide a huge variety of opportunities to work for and with your own community.”

Mr Higgins said he eventually hoped to move to Perth and start a career taking his experiences with the Shire into working to help others and “make an even bigger impact”.
