Robberies on the rise across Australia for fourth year in a row

The number of robberies in Australia has risen for the fourth year running, with more than three-quarters of the victims men.

There were 11,775 robberies in 2019, an increase of 16 per cent from the year prior, according to figures released on Thursday by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Just under half were armed robberies, and of those, 46 per cent involved a knife.

“Most robberies (were) committed at a community location, such as a suburban street,” ABS Director of Crime and Justice Statistics William Milne said.

One in five of all victims, 22 per cent, were aged between 15 and 19 years.

A staggering 76 per cent of victims were men.

While the number of robberies has increased in recent years, it is lower than the 14,600 recorded in 2010.

The number of victims of burglary and car thefts also rose between 2018 and 2019.

Burglaries rose three per cent to 173,344, while car thefts went up nine per cent to 58,021.
