Nick Campo: Accused teenage killer driver of promising footballer has bail tweaked so he can get behind wheel

The teenager allegedly behind the wheel of the car that crashed and killed a promising footballer has had his bail tweaked to allow him to drive — but only behind the gates of his family farm. The 17-year-old driver — who cannot be named for legal reasons — had previously been charged with dangerous driving causing Nick Campo’s death following a devastating crash in North Lake. Prosecutors will allege the teenager was driving a Toyota Hilux on Farrington Road when it rolled then collided with a black Jeep Patriot SUV just before midnight on July 13. The Hilux had five people in the car including the driver, three 18-year-olds — Mr Campo, Tyler Rowe and Josh Jackson — and another 17-year-old boy. The boys had just left Mr Campo’s 18th birthday party and were on the way to a nightclub when the tragedy unfolded. The teen driver is also facing three counts of dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm and two counts of dangerous driving occasioning bodily harm to his other mates. The accused first faced court last month from a hospital bed just days after the crash. On Tuesday, he attended Perth Children’s Court in person, accompanied by his family and lawyer Michael Tudori. The upgraded charge was read to him — and he was not required to plead to any of the allegations. Mr Tudori said he had received some evidentiary material from the Major Crash Squad, but there was more to come. The case was adjourned until November. Until then, the boy will remain released on bail, which had been granted on conditions that he did not drive and that he does not contact the passengers who were in the car. However, that condition was amended to say that he was not allowed to drive on any publicly gazetted road in WA. He will now be able to control a vehicle – without passengers – on his family’s private property. Mr Tudori said that would enable him to work on that property with his family once he had finished school. Since his death, Nick Campo’s have been outspoken about increasing awareness and conversations about road safety, and attended last week’s emergency summit following the spate of deaths on WA’s roads this year. “It’s like being thrown into a jail cell to be honest and they put the lock on and we know we will never get out of it,” Daniel Campo said about his son’s death. “It’s a void ... its going to be hard of course for my wife and my two other children. “People have just got to understand a vehicle was made for one reason, to get you from A to B. “Please everyone, just please be safe.”
