Highgate road rage: Man charged over incident on Brisbane Street that saw scooter destroyed

VideoA car has struck a scooter on Beaufort Street in an apparent case of road rage.

Police have laid charges over a road rage incident captured on video in Highgate on Friday.

A 45-year-old man has been charged over the incident that took place on Brisbane Street just before 4pm.

Police will allege the accused man was driving a Nissan X-Trail and that the victim, who has been identified as Anthony Van Pham, was riding an electronic scooter when they were involved in a near collision at the intersection of Beaufort and Brisbane Streets.

“As a result of the near collision a verbal and physical altercation ensued in which the accused allegedly assaulted the victim causing him to fall to the ground,” a police statement said.

“The accused then ran over the victim’s scooter causing significant damage.”

The 45-year-old man from Coolbinia has been charged with one count of common assault and one count of criminal damage or destruction of property.

He will appear in the Perth Magistrate’s Court on July 7.

A video posted online captured some of the incident unfolding (watch in the player above).

The footage posted on Facebook showed the driver and Mr Van Pham in a heated confrontation at traffic lights. The footage then showed the driver of the car pushing Mr Pham to the ground, getting back into his car before driving over his scooter.

Two tradies could also be seen running after the car.

Mr Pham later stated that his dog was in his carry bag at the time the road rage took place.

“This driver tried to push me off the road with his car, yelling, ‘Get off the road you Asian c... — roads are for cars,” Mr Pham said at the time.

“When I stopped, he jumped out of his car, pushed me over then got back into his car drove over my scooter, destroying it.”
