An inmate has died at the Albany Regional Prison in Western Australia.

The 29-year-old man was found unconscious in a change room of the prison's kitchen on Monday afternoon.

The Department of Justice said first aid was performed with onsite medical staff treating the man until paramedics arrived.

He was taken to Albany Health Campus, where he was declared deceased.

As with all deaths in custody, WA police are investigating and will prepare a report for the state coroner.
