A City of Greater Geraldton contractor has been enlisted to clean up thousands of dead fish found last week along the Greenough River.

The dead fish were found in a 100 metre area along the north shore of Greenough River and adjacent to the boat ramp.

The mass die-off incident is currently under investigation by the Department of Water and Environment Regulation.

In a statement officers of the Department of Water and Environment Regulation said fish deaths are often water quality related such as reduced dissolved oxygen and changes in salinity, which is consistent with the recent rains and high tides in the area.

The fish were identified as mostly Bony Herring and Black Bream.

A spokesperson for the City of Greater Geraldton said the fish would be disposed of in the organic waste stream at Meru Landfill.

The Department of Health advises contact with dead fish should be avoided and recommends not eating or handling fish found in these circumstances.
