Geraldton schools celebrate NAIDOC Week early due to school holiday clash

Schools around Geraldton have celebrated NAIDOC Week a little earlier than usual this year, as the school holidays coincide with the official July 3 to 10 celebrations.

The theme for NAIDOC Week 2022 is Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up!

Mount Tarcoola Primary, Champion Bay Senior High and St Francis Xavier Primary all brought their celebrations forward, complete with a performance by Aboriginal comedian Sean Choolburra.

Mount Tarcoola’s full day program took place on June 24 and included classroom activities, a parent morning tea and a kanga banga sausage sizzle.

Over the course of the day students were given the opportunity to learn about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, achievement and culture.

Champion Bay Senior High School also marked the occasion with Choolburra’s Live and Deadly performance for students in Year 7 and 8.

The entertaining performance engaged staff and students while presenting traditional cultural information with humour and variety, alongside his use of music and dance.

Choolburra was a busy man as he also attended St Francis Xavier Primary, captivating all with his mix of traditional dance, didgeridoo, stories, knowledge and humour.

Rangeway Primary School hosted an opening ceremony for NAIDOC Day featuring a Welcome to Country performed by Graham Taylor and a performance from the Wilinya Dancers.

Meanwhile, Rangeway’s senior football boys were victorious in the Barndi Mulganhu Birli Banagarri football game against Allendale PS.
