Kalgoorlie-Boulder’s new cafe Oil & Spice offers city-inspired vibe and diverse menu

Kalgoorlie-Boulder’s newest cafe is set to bring a taste of the big city to the outback with a quirky vibe and diverse menu. Located next to Kalgoorlie Woolworths, Oil & Spice offers all the much-loved cafe classics and some new-to-town delights. With a decade of cafe experience under her belt, co-owner Tegan Holdaway was excited to open the doors to her own business on Tuesday morning. “I wanted this to be a place somewhere not Kalgoorlie-themed, you come in here and you don’t feel like you’re in Kalgoorlie, you feel like you’ve adventured into the city, into Perth — a bit of a getaway,” she said. “I’ve tried to really make the menu a bit quirky, a bit different . . . there are lots of our classics on there so you can come in and find the things you want to have but there’s some different things on there, too.” Ms Holdaway hopes the menu can offer something for everyone, with a focus on vegan and vegetarian options while catering for meat eaters. She said the first-day nerves had worn off for her by the time she welcomed her first customers, as dozens of locals dropped in to experience the new cafe “where every sip tells a story”, as the slogan reads. The new cafe on the block comes as a joint venture between Ms Holdaway and the husband-and-wife duo Saleem and Samiah Umer, who own Kalgoorlie’s Hannan Street Cafe 312. Mr Umer said after working alongside Ms Holdaway for four years he was excited to be going into business with her.
