A new website five years in the making has launched at just the right time to help locals support Goldfields restaurants and cafes affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Developed by Kalgoorlie-Boulder resident Sean McManus, the Hungry in Kal website contains the menus, contact details and trading hours of businesses offering food delivery or takeaway services.

Mr McManus said the idea for the resource emerged during his quest to find menus from his favourite local restaurants online.

“I thought it’d be great if there was one place where every menu was available to download,” he said.

“I have a small web design business, so I thought this would be a good opportunity to build something useful for the community.”

Mr McManus started collecting and scanning menus onto his computer in 2015, using Windows Notepad to begin designing the website from scratch in 2017.

Officially launching last month, the website required much “trial and error”.

“Getting it to work on small mobile screens was the biggest challenge,” Mr McManus said.

He said he was thankful for the opportunity to operate the website at a time when the demand for takeaway and delivery food services was at its peak.

Restaurants and cafes can be included in the resource by getting in touch with Mr McManus through the Contact section on the Hungry in Kal website.
