The people of Wickepin have filled the local police station and primary school with food for charity over the Christmas season.

Wickepin Senior Constable Dorry Grzinic and Wickepin Primary School principal Ashlyn Groves opened up their station and school in December to encourage people to donate to Foodbank WA.

They teamed up with Wickepin Newspower and the Shire of Wickepin to create five collection points across the shire for “everyday food essentials” throughout the festive season. Ewen Rural Supplies spokeswoman Jayden Ewen said they set up a collection point at their business to help those who were left without food over the holiday period.

“We thought it was a good idea to give back to the community as there are a lot of people out there who are in need of help over Christmas,” he said.

Within 24 hours of opening up the program, the collection point at Wickepin Primary School had reached capacity.

“It is fantastic. It shows how good the community effort has been,” Const. Grzinic said.

Const. Grzinic estimated that nearly $700 of food had been donated to the police station.

“I can’t say that I am surprised, because this is what community towns are all about,” he said.

“It is wonderful we were able to get all of this food in before Christmas.”
