Perth has sweltered to its hottest Christmas Day since 2007.

The mercury peaked at 40.4C just before 2pm this afternoon, falling only a fraction of a degree short of the 40.7C record set in 2007.

Perth’s central weather observation station had already hit 30C by 8am.

The observation station in Pearce reached 42.5C just before midday — making it the hottest location in Perth’s metropolitan region so far today.

The weather is expected to drop down to a slightly cooler 34C in Perth tomorrow, followed by 32C on Sunday.
