Community Bank Mount Barker chairman John Howard has been named the Shire of Plantagenet’s citizen of the year for 2022.

The Mt Barker stalwart was presented with the award at the Shire’s Australia Day event at the Frost Pavilion on Wednesday.

The event was attended by more than 80 people including Warren-Blackwood MP Jane Kelsbie and WA senator Slade Brockman.

The Mt Barker Rotary Club hosted its annual breakfast, where four new Australian citizens were officially welcomed into the community.

Shire president Chris Pavlovich said Mr Howard was a worthy recipient.

“He has been the chairman of the Bendigo Mount Barker Community Bank for 15 years and has been a very active member of the community,” he said.

“He plays a pivotal role flying the community bank flag and putting the profits back into the community.”

The Rotary Club presented its vocational award to long standing councillor Sue Etherington.

Ms Etherington was a foundation member of Empowering Plantagenet Seniors, a volunteer-run organisation hosting social activities and providing support services for senior residents.

Mr Pavlovich said Cr Etherington had been instrumental in starting up the seniors group.

“It’s a social hub in our community and helps with not only social avenues but access to services,” he said.
