Shire of Laverton proposes 10 per cent rates rise in 2024-25 budget

Shire of Laverton residents will be hit with a substantial 10 per cent increase in rates if councillors approve the proposed 2024-25 budget at this week’s meeting, with the shire president blaming the rising cost of living. “Everything you touch these days is about double the bloody price it was five years ago,” Pat Hill said. “Everything is going up and that is the trouble, you unfortunately have to keep ahead of it. “I know it’s not very good for the person paying rates: I’m one of them.” He said the shire had received no responses when the proposed rates went out for public comment. The budget for the 2024-25 financial year includes funds for airport renovations, an alternate water source project, flood mitigation works and roadworks. The shire has forecast $12.1 million in revenue, down $3.8m from the previous financial year because of a drop in income from grants, subsidies, fees and interest revenue. Ratepayers account for $7.5m of the shire’s income, with Cr Hill confirming mining occupants represented the majority of rates revenue. Despite the planned $14.4m expenditure outpacing the shire’s revenue, the budget remains in the black due to contributions from capital grants and subsidies. Cr Hill said the expenditure would contribute to several major projects including the Outback Way, a long-term project that would see a 2700km road sealed from Laverton to Winton in Queensland. He said he was hopeful to restart construction in the new year after a three-year hiatus. The budget also allocated funds to building government regional officer housing and a flood mitigation project after the region received record-breaking rainfall that damaged roads and properties in April. Councillors will vote on the budget and rate rise at the upcoming council meeting on August 15.
