Opportunity at disability jobs expo

A disability employment business expo hosted by the City of Rockingham will kick off on Thursday evening.

The event will be held at the Gary Holland Community Centre and will help connect many different businesses with disability employment services, job seekers and others in the community.

Rockingham Kwinana Chamber of Commerce member Gecko Contracting understands the importance of making sure everyone has the chance to work and get paid.

One of their employees, Sophie Harrison, 23, is a registered client of the Autism Association of Western Australia and has worked with Gecko Contracting for about 18 months.

She works as an assistant gardener and her mother, Sue Harrison, said this was her daughter’s first paid job.

“Gecko Contracting have been extremely understanding and highly supportive, we have really landed on gold with them,” she said.

“It has been difficult to find a good job that is paid and we worked hard to find Gecko, as a family we are incredibly appreciative they offered Sophie this.”

“She feels a tremendous sense of worth, she is the same as everyone else and wants to experience the value of work and appropriate employment and this job has done wonders for her sense of self-worth and self-esteem.

“We are incredibly proud of her.”

The disability expo will run from 5pm till 7pm and could help many others achieve the same success story as Sophie.
