Heartless vandals targeted a popular South West family playground in the lead-up to Christmas, causing $25,000 damage and leaving the equipment out of use over the summer break.

The Dalyellup Lakes playground in the Shire of Capel fell victim to vandals again in December having just recently been reopened after a prior act of damage.

Five shade sails were burnt by the vandals, with the melted plastic dripping on to the sand below and damaging the newly replaced slide, swings and flying fox.

The thoughtless act left the Shire to foot a significant bill of an estimated $25,000 to replace the equipment and clean up the mess.

Families keen to enjoy the playground over the summer school holidays will be left disappointed, with the facility expected to remain closed for several months until replacement equipment can be ordered and installed.
