Now is the time for South West to capitalise on energy diversification and ecotourism, futurist says

The South West should capitalise on a push to diversify the WA economy away from mining, a futurist has said. Futurist Ben Hamer is heading to Bunbury for the Innovative Industries of the Futures Conference at the Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre on November 5 and 6. One area Mr Hamer said the South West should capitalise on is the search for different energy sources. “Mining basically dominates the West Australian identity, there’s a need to move beyond that,” he said. “There’ll be a really big opportunity naturally around the energy transition. “So how do we shift towards the renewable energy sector, including wind, solar, hydrogen, battery storage? I think that’s where the South West has a real opportunity to play in that space.” Mr Hamer will give a speech as part of the two-day event, discussing technologies and trends impacting how the region’s industries should plan for the future. He said the region should also focus on maximising its place in the ecotourism market. “Ecotourism is another one for the South West as well because what we’re seeing is more and more people spending time online and we have these increasingly digitised lives, people are seeking out more of nature,” he said. “They want to get their feet on the grass and I think that the South West is a really beautiful gateway incurred to that within Western Australia.” The IIF conference will also hear talks from US Consular General for WA Siriana Nair and Association of Mining and Exploration Companies chief executive Warren Pearce. Bunbury mayor Jaysen Miguel and Regional Development Minister Don Punch will also speak at the event.
