Remote import in the zone

New Printsync South West Slammers import Jay Washington is already a big fan of men’s coach Mark Worthington despite not even having set foot in the South West yet.

“He has done a really good job which I have been impressed with,” he said.

“Which helps me feel a lot better about signing with them. They gave me a great first impression and everything, but it has been really consistent.

“He is checking in with me once or twice a week. We have been in contact about what type of offence they are running, players we are going to have, so things have really started off on the right foot.”

With his summer season in the Darwin Basketball Association likely to linger into March, the influential point guard has welcomed regular feedback from the Slammers boss during pre-season training.

“Hopefully I will get there right before the first double header,” Washington said. “That is the goal but it all depends how we (Palmerston Power) how far we go in the post season.

“We are in third at 5-2, so it is looking promising. Literally as soon as I am done here, I’ll be looking to book a flight within a day and get down there to get started with the Slammers.

“That is why it has been good for coach to keep in contact with me. He is going to send me videos of the offence and everything so we can really hit the ground running once I am there.”

With the competition currently in recess until February, Washington has been busy training and spent some time in Brisbane over the festive season.

“I was in Brisbane for a while so I got close to some families down there through my old teammates,” he said.

“It was good to go back not only to work out but also to be around people I know really well.”
