Steve Thomas admits Collie residents unlikely to have “veto” in Coalition’s nuclear plans

State shadow energy minister Steve Thomas has admitted it is unlikely Collie residents would have a final say on whether a nuclear reactor was built in their town. Speaking to media on Monday following the Federal Government’s offshore wind farm zone announcement, Dr Thomas was forced to defend the Coalition’s own community consultation plans around a proposed Collie small modular reactor. Dr Thomas said he believed consultation would be done, but ultimately it would be out of the community’s hands. “Well all the way through, in my opinion, from whether it’s viable, they get to have an opinion as to whether they (Collie community) want it in their community, whether it’s viable, how it fits in, all of those things, they’ll have a proper consultation process now,” he said. “Whether in the end of the day they hold sway, whether they have a veto over the outcome is something that probably is not going to happen because it has to fit in an entire State energy system.” Dr Thomas insisted the consultation plan in Collie was superior to that done for the offshore wind farm zone. “The proposal for nuclear energy is going to be a long consultation with significant discussions with the local community, both Statewide and the town of Collie,” he said. “This (wind farm zone) is now being imposed, there is a zone now for wind farms which will make it almost impossible for anybody to stop one. “The discussion around nuclear energy, both for the Eastern States and for Western Australia, is a long and bold process that will see proper consultation, proper negotiation, and ultimately if it happens, by agreement with the community. “That is the complete antithesis of what we’ve seen here today.” The admission came the day after Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was in Collie, spruiking the town’s energy transition and announcing the results of the Federal Government’s WA Capacity Investment Scheme. Mr Albanese took his shot at the idea of nuclear in the region. “What Peter Dutton wants to do is to stop all this, do nothing until the 2040s and then have nuclear power, which on this site will produce around about one and a half per cent of what is required,” he said. “When all of his nuclear plans that he has outlined — forgetting about the fact that the space is already being used for other activity and other investment — peaks at 4 per cent of the total energy needs at that time. “What we need to do is to have real investment with real dollars, creating real jobs, creating real energy, now as we transition, because coal-fired power stations are shutting.”
