A mining worker has been missing underground for more than five hours on Tasmania's west coast.

Colleagues of the Henty Gold Mine worker raised the alarm about 4am on Thursday when they couldn't contact or find him.

The three workers discovered a section of collapsed earth in the area he had been working, about 20 minutes descent underground.

The mine's rescue team will commence searching for the man when it is deemed safe, with emergency service workers also at site.
