Two men are dead and the wife of one of the victims is missing after torrential rains devastated the Italian region of Catania in Sicily over the weekend.

The victims are a 53-year-old man who was found in the town of Gravina near Etna volcano and a 67-year-old man who had been missing with his wife since Saturday in Scordia.

Italian rescue teams are still searching for the woman.

The rains have caused severe flooding in the city, inundating roads, the central square, the emblematic Via Etnea and historic fish market.

Authorities placed the city under red alert on Sunday and the mayor has asked residents to stay indoors and ordered businesses to shut.
