A man who pointed a toy gun at a Melbourne university security guard has been released by police.

Police were called to Swinburne University's Croydon campus, in Melbourne's eastern suburbs, just before 10.30am on Tuesday following reports of a man with a firearm.

Witnesses say as many as 10 police cars, marked and unmarked, rushed to the scene.

Specialist police along with uniformed officers quickly responded and cordoned-off the area, arresting the 22-year-old Woori Yallock man shortly after.

A toy guy was seized at the scene.
