Iona Presentation College created a slice of school history on Tuesday when they won the WA Dunklings Perpetual Trophy as overall school champion in the Independent Girls’ Schools’ Sports Association WA athletics carnival.

Iona finished on 1317 points for the carnival ahead of Santa Maria College (1072) and St Mary’s Anglican Girls’ School (1059) to take home the prestigious trophy for the first time in the competition’s 57-year history at the State Athletics Stadium.

It was an exceptional day for the college, which also won the Laurie Packham Trophy for champion track school and the Elizabeth Davenport Trophy for champion field school.

“This is an historic moment for Iona Presentation College and something we have been working towards for many years,” principal Anne Pitos said.

“Congratulations to the entire athletics squad, staff and coaches, for achieving this wonderful victory.”

Iona’s year 8, 10, 11 and 12 competitors finished overall first, with the year 9 team placing second by just a point, while the year 7s were third.

A pair of year 7 students also claimed a slice of personal history, with Madison Naish setting a new record in the hurdles and Ava Fraser-Edwards doing the same in shotput.

Iona director of sport Janene Walton said the team felt like a family and the results showed.

“We are a united team. Every member had a part to play and the results were incredible with many PBs and excellent results in every discipline from hurdles, to jumps, throws and on the track,” she said.

The Independent Girls’ Schools’ Sports Association (IGSSA) WA was established in 1963 with the inaugural athletics carnival at Perry Lakes Stadium.
