*WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE FIRST MEN'S ASHES TEST:-

Play will start - weather permitting - at 10am (local time) on Wednesday in Brisbane. The Gabba, which hosted the final Test of the 2020-21 series between Australia and India, has returned to its traditional series-opening slot on the calendar.

*What will conditions be like?

Afternoon showers are forecast for day one. Wet weather should not create as many delays during the Test compared to what was feared last week. However, recent rain should ensure the pitch has something on offer for whichever side bowls first.

*Who holds the urn?

Australia. They recorded a resounding 4-0 series win at home in 2017-18. Justin Langer's side then bounced back from Headingley heartbreak, inflicted by Ben Stokes, to draw the 2019 series 2-2.

*What happened in Headingley?

Stokes' match-winning knock of 135, coupled with a remarkable spell on the preceding day, snatched an astonishing one-wicket victory for England. The combative allrounder was expected to miss this tour because of a finger injury and mental-health break but his inclusion is a major boost to the visitors' hopes of victory.

*How long has it been since England won an Ashes series in Australia?

Some 11 years ago. Jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad, both included in England's current Test squad, were part of the touring party that enjoyed a 3-1 series win. Remarkably, England haven't reclaimed the urn with a series win in Australia since 1970-71.

*What is the selection news?

Australia have locked in their XI, opting to call up debutant wicketkeeper Alex Carey and No.5 batter Travis Head in place of Tim Paine and Matthew Wade. England are still mulling their options, but have confirmed spearhead Jimmy Anderson is sitting out the opening Test. Pat Cummins, promoted after Paine's tearful resignation, will be captaining Australia for the first time.
