WA’s octopus sector could rival the lucrative western rock lobster: seafood industry advocates

WA’s nascent octopus sector has the potential to expand and grow in a way not seen since the early days of the State’s lucrative western rock lobster, according to two seafood industry advocates. Glenn Wheeler, managing director of Fremantle Octopus Group, said WA’s octopus managed fishery industry was in its infancy, having only been established in 2015. But the industry in WA was already growing in popularity, he said, after generating between $18 million and $20m in sales in the 2023 financial year. “What Australians are only slowly learning is it’s a delicacy in many Asian and southern European countries,” Mr Wheeler said. “The health benefits of octopus are phenomenal . . . it has the same amount of protein per 100g as beef, chicken and pork, but much higher in Omega-3s and iron. “The octopus we catch, you can’t catch anywhere else in the world. We’re the Louis Vuitton of octopus.” Mr Wheeler added the octopus was “now coming into its own” and no longer considered just a by-catch of western rock lobsters, which have become biggest and most valuable single-species wild-catch fishery in Australia. Darryl Hockey, chief executive of WA Fishing Industry Council, said the State had gone from catching less than 40 tonnes of octopus a year in 2008 to more than 700 tonnes already this year. He said the industry could go as high as 2000 tonnes a year. “It’s going to have a lot of economic impact and benefit for the State, it’s going to create a lot of jobs,” Mr Hockey said. “With our heritage in WA, with Mediterranean people, I think it’s something that’s really going to be broadly accepted by the community. “There will a lot of local demand for this and it could well be part of our culture in the future that we throw some octopus on the barbecue at Christmas.” Fremantle Octopus operates across three managed fishing zones along the WA coastline, from Jurien Bay down to Busselton and employs 90 people. Mr Wheeler pointed to a 2016 study by the University of South Australia, which found the cephalopod population, including octopus, squid and cuttlefish, had increased significantly over the 60 years to 2013. “If all these cephalopods and octopus are exploding like that but no one here in WA is really fishing for them . . . boy does that sound like a high-potential industry,” Mr Wheeler said. He said Fremantle Octopus had seen domestic demand grow almost 20 per cent in the 2023 financial year, while its international exports were up 50 per cent. Fremantle Octopus operates one of only two Marine Stewardship Council-certified octopus fisheries in the world. The business supplies to Coles across Australia and exports to more than 470 US supermarket chain Whole Foods stores. Its international markets include Singapore, Hong Kong, Dubai, London, Vancouver, Canada, Germany, France and Italy. Mr Wheeler said the MSC certification, which confirms the fishery meets international best practice for sustainable fishing, was a “huge advantage” for the business in international markets. Fremantle Octopus — founded in 2001 but re-structured with new management and shareholders in 2017 — had also developed a trigger trap technology that increased catch rates five times over traditional methods. “The trigger trap technology that we have is self-selecting . . . a baby octopus can’t trigger the trap and there is no by-catch and no ghost fishing,” Mr Wheeler said.
