Medicinal cannabis could soon get the green light in France, says Little Green Pharma founder Fleta Solomon

Little Green Pharma founder and executive director Fleta Solomon is confident France will legalise the use of medicinal cannabis later this year, a move she expects will result in other countries following suit. The Perth-based, ASX-listed grower and provider of medicinal cannabis oils and flowers on Wednesday reported a record revenue of $25.6 million for the 2024 financial year, up nearly 30 per cent on the previous year. Contributing to this was the record quarterly revenue of $7.3m in the three months to the end of March, up 34 per cent on the prior quarter. While the company reported strong growth in Australia — where sales are up 27 per cent from the prior quarter, driven by its Cherry Co brand launching in late December — Europe remains a key focus. LGP had been among five suppliers for a three-year medicinal cannabis trial in France that finished at the end of March and continues to be one of the two exclusive suppliers to French patients during a nine-month transitional period. LGP has supplied over 60 per cent of all medicines in the trial, making the company the largest supplier. “What we believe is that the results have been really positive from that study, both from the (French) Government’s perspective and also from the patients and the doctors’ perspective,” Ms Solomon said. “Therefore, we are anticipating the French Government to actually legalise cannabis for medical use soon.” LGP is now preparing market authorisation applications in France for a range of cannabis medicines. “When France presses the button and says, ‘Yes we’re legalising it for medical use’, I think (that will) . . . open up a plethora of other countries in the region to consider cannabis use in the medicine field.” In addition to France, the company also has several deals with distributors in other European countries including the UK, Denmark, Belgium and Italy. It entered Poland and Switzerland in the March quarter. Ms Solomon — who stepped down as chief executive last August and was succeeded by LGP’s chief operating officer Paul Long — is excited about Europe’s potential even more so now following news in late February that Germany had legalised cannabis for limited recreational use. The new rules mean adults can posses small amounts for personal use but the drug remains banned for anyone under the age of 18. LGP said there were early signs of strong patient uptake in Germany following the legalisation. “This significant change is arguably the most substantial development in the cannabis industry . . . since Canada legalised cannabis use in 2018,” Ms Solomon said. The report on Wednesday revealed quarterly sales for dried flowers were up 57 per cent, oils up 2 per cent and vaporisers up 7 per cent. “It just shows that . . . the pathway to access has just improved two-fold since the company started in 2016 when there were no prescriptions,” Ms Solomon said.
