Perth Breakfast and Brunch: The Roastery, Canning Vale

There are hole-in the-wall brunch joints so tucked away you need a mud map to find them. There are poky little cafes barely big enough to have their own street number, where you need good timing and some luck to bag one of the three available tables. And then there’s The Roastery: a big, loud brunch cafe you might be tempted to judge first on the fact that it’s slapped down in the middle of a Canning Vale shopping centre, next to a massage shop and a juice bar. As it happens, you might not need specialised instructions to find The Roastery but you do need good timing to get a table there. On the busy Sunday when I turn up with my daughters we’re only just in time to snaffle the last spot in the big space, where sacks of coffee beans help carve up the space into more manageable sections. Orders are taken at the counter but don’t let the long line put you off: it moves faster than a cup of coffee through the lower intestine. Chilli and Feta Scram has some heat on it (the hint is in the name) thanks to the house-made sriracha. It’s a slow heat and not so overpowering as to ruin the creaminess of the feta-spiked eggs. Two big slices of multigrain toast make it a generous dish — although I didn’t let that stop me from ordering a side of crunchy, salty hash browns. It’s scrumptious and the hash browns are so good I send my kids back to the counter for another round. Who says child labour is always a bad thing? Big breakfasts are a theme here: there’s the Farm Yard Breakfast, featuring Moroccan fried chicken, and The Roastery breakfast, which comes with a cheese-kransky sausage and is accurately described on the menu as “huge”. There are also smaller snacky things in the display cabinet, including a very good orange almond loaf, which some people might classify as a cake but I prefer to call breakfast bread. No cafe called The Roastery can afford not to take its coffee seriously and they roast their own beans here, which tells you what you need to know. The coffee is good: smooth enough to quaff but with the strength of Algerian powerhouse Imane Khelif. A small ordering mishap (my fault, not the cafe’s) means that I also wind up with a chocolate milkshake. It’s not my usual choice of breakfast beverage but perhaps I’ve been missing a trick because it’s rich, creamy and gone too soon. The Roastery doesn’t need my seal of approval: this friendly, casual, charming cafe is doing just fine getting punters in the door and I can see why. Still, here I am giving it anyway, because I like it a lot. The verdict: 14/20 This big friendly venue has a big friendly vibe.
