Albany City Kart Club hosts annual Southern Sprint this weekend bringing competitors from around the State

Karting lovers are revving their engines ready to hit the track this weekend as the Albany City Kart Club hosts the annual Southern Sprint. The Southern Sprint marks round one of the WA Karting Series and will take place on Saturday and Sunday of the long weekend. Club president Andrew Hanning said the event had attracted competitors from across the State. “This year we have 131 entries I believe, with quite a big field of juniors,” he said. “We’ve got a lot of people travelling from Bunbury, Perth, Kalgoorlie, Karratha, some from Port Headland, Geraldton and everywhere. “Being the opening round (of the WA Karting Series) we will get a few more people down to the Albany track.” This year Hanning said there were quite a few divisions racing at the meeting. “We’ve got 12 classes that’ll be running between cadets, juniors and seniors,” he said. “We’ve got cadet nines and 12s. “We’ve got juniors KA2 which is the performance junior category, KZ 300cc engine for the seniors, tag 125 and tag 125 restricted and KZ2 which is the gearbox engine.” Hanning said there were a few Albany participants who would be strong chances. “This year off the top of my head in juniors we’ve got Ben Keen and Brock Kinnear,” he said. “In the seniors we’ve got Jake Jurgielewicz, Jayden Lister, James Campbell, Nathan and Chloe Terrell.” The weekend is set to have a big turnout and Hanning said it’s always a great weekend. “I imagine it’ll be a very well respected event,” he said. “Everyone loves coming out and they love the track.”
