Police reveal shock twist in Spencer Park murder investigation as victim Erica Coyne’s son Lloyd Mitchell dies

Police believe a man arrested over the death of his mother in Albany was also fatally attacked on the same day, issuing a public appeal for help to find the person responsible. Police found 69-year-old woman Erica Coyne dead in her Spencer Park unit on February 8, and arrested her son Lloyd Mitchell, 50, who had also sustained life-threatening injuries. Mr Mitchell was rushed from the Burville Street residence to Royal Perth Hospital where he was placed in an induced coma in the intensive care unit. It is understood he was seen by a neurosurgeon for what is believed to be a critical head injury. On Friday, police confirmed Mr Mitchell had died after a decision was made to turn his life support off on February 28, and revealed detectives are now treating the incident as a double murder. It is understood Mr Mitchell turned 51 while in RPH before his death. Police believe the person responsible for Mr Mitchell’s death is still on the run, but have reassured the community there is no information to suggest there is an ongoing risk to the community. “This is an unimaginable loss for the victims’ loved ones, and our detectives are determined to uncover every fact and hold whoever is responsible to account,” Det. Sen. Sgt Steve Cleal from homicide squad said. “Someone in the community knows something, and we are asking them to come forward. “Any piece of information, big or small – no matter how insignificant you think it is – could lead us to the answers the victims’ family deserves.”
