IN PICTURES: Strong crowd dress to impress as Albany Sportsperson of the Year Awards return in terrific style

After a lengthy hiatus, the Albany Sportsperson of the Year Awards returned in style as the best athletes of 2023 were recognised. More than 100 people gathered at Retravaision Stadium for the gala awards presentation, run by the City of Albany. Athletes, coaches, officials and supporters from a wide range of sports were in the room to see who was crowned Albany’s sporting elite in their respective categories. AFL premiership player Darcy Cameron was awarded the major gong, named the Wellington & Reeves Albany sportsperson of the year after his stellar 2023 season for Collingwood was capped with a grand final win. Pararoos star Connor Bunce claimed the senior title, highly-talented runner Demi Burns took the junior category and classy shooter Steve Hurley was named the veteran winner. The strong crowd on hand also heard from guest speaker and former professional rugby league player Matt Fuller. Fuller spoke about his journey from a young kid to playing in the NRL and also detailed his strong connection with raising funds for Telethon. Joining him on stage to speak was Olympic pole vaulter Nina Kennedy and AFLW defender Sophie McDonald.
