Margaret River’s men’s football side have claimed an historic first in a weekend of upsets at Bunbury’s Hay Park.

Football Margaret River’s men’s side seized the Bunbury Hay Park Charity Shield in a thumping match against Dalyellup Park Rangers where the Capes side took the win 4-1.

In a captivating clash against the much-touted Dalyellup, the intensity was palpable from the onset, with both teams showcasing relentless determination.

A pivotal moment arrived when FMR orchestrated a brilliant play down the right flank, culminating in a sensational volley by Connor Thurston into the top right corner, putting Margaret River into the lead.

Undeterred, Dalyellup continued to press forward, but FMR’s solid defence held firm.

Margaret River extended their lead in the second half, effectively sealing the game with a second and third goal.

Although Dalyellup managed to pull one back, FMR closed the contest with Luke Johnston’s shot rebounding off the bar, allowing Thurston to secure his brace and seal a 4-1 victory.

The triumph marked a historic moment for Football Margaret River as they lifted the Charity Shield for the first time in their history.

With previous successes at the Margaret River Carnival, the team’s stellar performance sets an optimistic tone for the upcoming season.

The Mermaids women’s squad weren’t as fortunate in their fiercely contested battle against Dalyellup earlier in the day.

Despite an early goal to Dalyellup, the Mermaids equalised with a penalty, the match finishing 1-1 at the end of regulation time before a penalty shootout to decide the shield winner.

Dalyellup emerged victorious thanks to a few saves from their goalkeeper, securing the shield for their team.
