Jack Robinson’s dream of first world championship on the line in final WSL Championship Tour events of 2025

Jack Robinson’s dream of breaking through for his first world championship will go on the line for 2025 in the final two events of the World Surf League’s Championship Tour. The Margaret River surfer sits at No.7 in the world rankings and will need to break into the top five in order to qualify for the league’s finals at the world famous Cloudbreak in Fiji in August. Currently on 34,225 points for the season, Robinson is only 855 points behind No.6 Griffin Colapinto but is further adrift of fellow Australian Ethan Ewing, who occupies the final spot in the top five with 37,140 points. He will likely need strong showings at both this week’s J-Bay Open in South Africa and the final event of the season, the Tahiti Pro, to qualify for the finals for the fourth year running. Robinson bounced back from a round-of-32 exit at his hometown Margaret River Pro with a strong showing at last month’s Trestles Pro in California, where he fell just short of a place in the final by being on the wrong end of a thrilling semifinal against Japan’s Kanoa Igarashi. But he found the going tougher at Brazil’s preceding Rio Pro, where he exited in the round-of-16. Robinson is yet to win any of his matches in the one-day, winner-takes-all finals, which were first introduced in 2021. A first call for the J-Bay Open will be made at 1.30pm WA time on Friday, with early competition shaping as likely under the current forecast.
