Surf Lifesaving WA perform 20 emergency rescues following risky abalone fishing trip at Mettams Pool

Surf lifesavers rescued someone every three minutes during the first abalone fishing session on Saturday morning. Amid windy and choppy conditions, hundreds of keen abalone fishers headed to the beach for the first legal session of the summer between 7am and 8am. At Mettams Pool, despite warnings to wear appropriate gear, including wetsuits and footwear, some fishers still entered the water wearing jeans and thongs. While fishing is risky and sources are limited, abalone is a highly sought-after delicacy, with consumption in Chinese culture believed to bring good fortune and abundance for the rest of the year Surf Lifesaving WA thanked their team of more than 190 volunteers for patrolling the coast between Guilderton and Busselton. Volunteers conducted 570 preventative actions, and performed 10 minor first aids and 20 rescues over the hour-long period.
