Police issue stern warning to ‘hoon motorcyclists’ after spate of reckless chases: ‘We will catch you’

The WA Police Force has issued a stern reminder of its zero tolerance for dangerous and unlawful hooning after a spate of high-speed motorcycle pursuits, telling riders there was “nowhere to run, nowhere to hide”. Commander Mike Peters of the Road Policing Command said even though the majority of motorcyclists did the right thing, there were a “selfish few” whose dangerous and reckless stunts on WA roads put not only their own lives but others’ at risk. It came after he promised that any motorbike rider breaching the law by failing to stop for police would be found “every single time”, and that while the number of offenders was rising, so were the number of motorbike seizures. “I can tell you now that if the Air Wing track you, you won’t get away. Police will apprehend you every single time, there is no doubt about it,” Commander Peters said. “With helicopters and other air assets up there is nowhere to run or hide. We will find you. “We regularly see footage where people think they’re going to outsmart us or outrun us. You wont.” The warning follows the arrest of five motorcyclists over a four-day period earlier this month, one of whom was just 15 years old. “The commonalities with these five riders were obviously speed, the reckless nature of which they were riding, and also a number of them were not actually supposed to be on the road,” he said, adding that some of the riders had been travelling at catastrophic speeds and running red lights. “These drivers came to our attention because of their reckless riding behaviour. They were spotted in various locations across the metropolitan area, both north and south ... (and) our state of the art helicopters and other air assets were used in (their) apprehension.” The first of the five incidents unfolded just before midnight on May 6 when police allege a 34-year-old Forrestfield man rode through Gosnells and surrounding suburbs on a stolen KTM motorbike. It will be alleged during a police pursuit the man, who had a disqualified driver’s licence, was driving recklessly and eventually abandoned the bike in Hilbert where he “fled on foot”. “Ground units were directed to a residence on Bowmont Way, where the man was located and arrested hiding behind a brick wall,” a police statement said. “It will be further alleged he stole the motorcycle in August 2023, from a car port on Canterbury Terrace in East Victoria Park.” The bike was impounded and the man was charged with five offences including trespass, reckless driving to escape pursuit and failing to comply with a direction to stop. He has been remanded in custody and is next due in Armadale Magistrates Court on November 6. Just under 24 hours later a 35-year-old Queensland man was arrested after allegedly leading officers on a high-speed chase through areas surrounding Whiteman on the back of a Harley Davidson. It will be alleged he abandoned the bike at a truck facility on Gnangara Road in Wangara, and that police later arrested him after they found him “hiding on top of a semi-trailer”. “It will be further alleged he had no authority to drive,” police said in a statement, adding that the Woree man had been charged with five offences including driving recklessly at a speed above 155km per hour and possessing meth and cannabis. He is due in Midland Magistrates Court on June 6, where he will appear from in custody. The third incident unfolded about 7.30pm on Thursday, when a 15-year-old allegedly fled police on the back of a small off-road motorcycle, travelling at speed through Mirrabooka with no protective gear or licence plates. “Ground units located the male a short time later on a footpath on Beach Road, where he was quickly apprehended. The off-road motorcycle was impounded, and it will be further alleged the male had no authority to drive,” police alleged in a statement. The Balga teen, whose alleged behaviour despite his young age left Commander Peters “gobsmacked”, was charged with four offences including reckless driving to escape pursuit, driving on a suspended licence. He s due in Perth Children’s Cort on June 11. “I’m gobsmacked it shocks me every single time I see this sort of thing,” he said. “It’s hard to understand why a 35-year-old person will do it. It’s mind blowing to think that a 15-year-old in their formative years is out doing this sort of thing. “It’s absolutely ridiculously dangerous and selfish. This is selfish behaviour that’s unnecessarily putting other road users at absolute risk for no reason at all.” About four hours later in Bateman a 20-year-old Man from Martin was charged with reckless driving exceeding the speed limit by 45km/h r more and failing to comply with a direction to stop. It came after he allegedly failed to stop and instead led police on a chase down Kwinana Freeway at “excessive speeds” on a blue Yamaha motorcycle. The motorcycle was tracked by the Police Air Wing to Talbot Way in Woodlands, where ground units intercepted it and arrested the man, who is due in Perth Magistrates Court on June 5. The following night on Friday May 9 it will be alleged a 26-year-old Wanneroo man travelled recklessly on a BMW motorcycle, with no licence plates, throughout Wangara and surrounding suburbs. It will be further alleged the man reached speeds in excess of 45km/h over the speed limit in 50km/h zones. Ground units were quickly directed to a Balga home where a man was arrested and charged with five offences including failing to obey and order. His motorcycle was impounded and he was remanded in custody to appear in Perth Magistrates Court on June 6. Commander Peters said while police were “certainly seizing more vehicles than we have in the past years, and that is certainly a rising trend”, the numbers were likely in proportion with the rise in people using the road network. Minister for Police Reece Whitby described the actions of those few motorbike riders driving recklessly as “outrageous” and naive. “There are eyes in the sky. What you do will be seen. The State Government has made major investments in the air capability of WA Police. Fixed wing, helicopters and drones. All of them are being deployed. All of them can see what you are doing,” he said. “There was a time when motorcyclists thought they could get away with these things. They thought they could nimbly duck around side streets and evade police. Not anymore. Those days have gone. “If you behave like a fool, like an idiot on your motorbike, you will be seen, and you will lose your bike.”
