Community expo gives new residents a chance to discover opportunities in Kalgoorlie-Boulder

Local community groups, service providers and sporting associations came together on Saturday morning to showcase the opportunities and vibrant lifestyle that Kalgoorlie-Boulder can offer new residents. The inaugural Welcome to Kalgoorlie-Boulder community expo was hosted by Goldfields Multicultural Community Organisation, in collaboration with Goldfields Community Legal Centre, at Centennial Park. From multicultural market stalls, traditional cuisine, and live performances, the event united cultures from across the globe. GCLC principal solicitor Loiwe Nyirongo said the free event attracted more than 20 stallholders, including hockey clubs calling for more players, and service providers showcasing their programs. Ms Nyirongo said while similar events had taken place in the past, Saturday’s expo aimed to support new and existing residents from diverse cultural backgrounds. “It was targeting . . . migrants that are coming into town just to show them what Kalgoorlie has to offer, that it’s more than just a working (town),” she said. “A lot of people tend to feel isolated when they first come into town and they don’t know who can support them. “By being able to see what’s out there, the hope is that people will not just be in their houses and feeling isolated, they can go out there and enjoy the different groups and participate in a meaningful way.” The event was supported by member for Kalgoorlie Ali Kent and The Y. Ms Nyirongo said organisers hoped to develop the community expo into an annual event.
