Esperance promises council live stream will eventuate, despite delays.

Shire of Esperance president Ian Mickel says live streaming of council meetings is still on track to happen.

Last year the council decided to live stream and record meetings after residents became locked out amid the pandemic. In a teleconference with media last week, Cr Mickel gave assurances live streaming would eventuate in the coming months.

“We still have the aim (to livestream), there’s no question about that,” he said.

“We just want to get it right, we’ve said that from day one, we don’t want a second or third-rate service, we want people to actually hear what’s going on, on the other end.”

Mr Burge expressed support for the digital move, citing it as an opportunity for transparency, but also said it was “not that important” when asked when the streaming would begin.

“In my view live streaming (council meetings) is not that important, it’s about making the recordings available to go look at when it’s convenient for (residents),” he said.

Both men confirmed the February council meeting had been filmed and would be on the Shire of Esperance website in the coming weeks.
