Dixie Marshall opens up about Colin Barnett, life after politics and working in advertising

The Barbecue Shapes did it. Dixie Marshall was pushing a trolley around the supermarket, her young son in tow, when a stranger walked up and peered in. “This woman put her hand into my shopping trolley, took the Barbecue Shapes out, and said ‘what are you doing? You can’t feed your son Barbecue Shapes!’” Marshall says. “I’m like ‘OK lady thanks, they are for me’.” Marshall laughs about it now, but this kind of attention at the beginning of this decade was getting on her nerves. She had never wanted to be a celebrity but, as the face of the Channel 9 news bulletin she was well known enough that strangers felt her shopping trolley was fair game. After more than two decades in journalism, Marshall decided she wanted to do something where she could fade into the background but still be in the thick of it: politics. “I could put my celebrity behind me and shut that door,” Marshall says. “That was one of the reasons to change my career ... I wasn’t enjoying being a celebrity.” Be careful what you wish for. In 2011 Marshall took a job with the State government as then-premier Colin Barnett’s media relations director. It’s a job that will have you on a first-name basis with half the State’s media but rarely in the news yourself. For Marshall, however, things did not pan out like that. From the moment she arrived on the hill she was a figure of fascination. Her internal emails were leaked to the press, her influence was dissected in the media, she was a regular feature in political cartoons. The Labor Opposition used parliamentary question time to debate if she was overpaid. Liberal Party circles gossiped she was secretly after one of their seats. For Marshall it was a surreal experience — watching on as the public perception of her went from well-liked local newsreader, “a bit of fluff” as she puts it, to a Machiavellian political puppetmaster. “It became such a fantasy about what sort of person I was that it sort of overtook reality,” she says. But Marshall, who started her career as a footy journalist, is many of the things that make women figures of public fascination and occasionally, targets. She is smart, sharp-tongued, beautiful and charismatic. She is always (always) immaculately turned out, with her trademark pixie cut and 1000-Watt smile and a big, throaty laugh. She’s got the unfortunate combo of being a reluctant celebrity and having natural star power. Since the Barnett government suffered its bruising defeat in March 2017, Marshall has kept mum about her treatment in those years and the toll the public perception of her had on her private life. She has agreed to speak now — in part to clear the air, and in part because, in case anyone was wondering, she wants them to know this: she’s good. Actually, she is great. She is working at top marketing firm Marketforce, where she founded a content creation division which recently won a prestigious “skull” — a Perth Advertising and Design Club Award. “I guess I am really chuffed about it,” she says of the new trophy. Today she really is working behind the scenes. Producing advertising and marketing content you may see popping up on your web browser, at the bus stop or even in this newspaper. It’s a far cry from her time in politics. In 2013, then-State political editor for The West Australian Gareth Parker wrote: “More than two years after her appointment as the Premier’s media relations director, the former Channel 9 newsreader remains a lightning rod for controversy and an irresistible talking point for the Opposition, the government and, we admit it, her former colleagues in the media.” Parker, who is now a presenter on 6PR radio, laughs when that line is repeated back to him today. “She was a lightning rod,” he says. “It started almost as soon she was appointed. “Dixie came into this very staid government, where Barnett was dominant and his ministers tiptoed around him. She sort of behaved like she always had in the media, as her personality is, bold, fun, take no prisoners. “It was clear Barnett really liked her but some of the ministers and backbenchers didn’t like her at all. She was extremely direct in her opinions about their performance, and some felt they were being dictated to about what they could and couldn’t say.” Today Marshall is reflective about the wild ride that was her former job but she is still baffled at how she evolved into a figure of fascination. And in truth, she is still a little angry that she became such a target. Her biggest bugbear about the whole thing, is what she says are the double standards. The expectations about how a woman in a powerful position should act. She understands politics is a brutal game — but she was frustrated when her gender seemed to skew the conversation. “The language thing is the one that always gets me,” she says. “There are numerous articles written about me regarding my ‘foul language’. The blokes swear 10 times (as much). “If I was a bloke it would be colourful language but I’m a chick and it’s foul mouthed. That is just incredibly unfair.” And then there were the cartoons. “(Cartoonist Dean) Alston drew me as a dominatrix,” she says. “He drew me regularly in high heels, fishnet stockings and the Madonna breasts. What is that all about?” She did eventually complain to Alston and former editor of The West Australian Brett McCarthy about the cartoons, despite being worried about doing so because she “didn’t want to be seen as someone who has lost their sense of humour or got ahead of herself”. She says she was happy to roll with the punches to a certain extent but she felt some of the commentary on her, and the job she was doing, crossed a line. “I was clearly very naive because I did not expect that level of abuse, in a way, from my former colleagues and my current ones in the political sphere. It wasn’t particularly helpful to the office (and) it wasn’t particularly helpful to Colin, that I had become a target. “If I was a bloke I would be fierce and strong and determined, but I’m a chick, so I am overreaching,” she says. The night before our chat she met Daniel Pastorelli at an event. Who? Her point exactly. “He’s the guy who does my former job (media director in the Premier’s office) now but you wouldn’t know his name,” she says. “We do the exact same job, I assume get paid the same amount, and nobody would know his name. Which again: why?” Pastorelli was not, however, famous when he walked into that office. Marshall was. She is also no shrinking violet. Whether she likes it or not, she is the kind of person who demands attention. “Dixie was no low-profile person,” former premier Barnett says. “She was often out there and having opinions and saying things, so she was bound to attract some attention but it did get unfair at times. “Dixie is her own person and she has a huge personality. Some people didn’t like her direct approach, I did. In government sometimes you have to be a bit tough and get to the issue and get on with it and Dixie certainly did that.” That huge personality provided plenty of fodder for journalists. “The first email that I sent to my team in the Premier’s office was leaked. The very first one,” Marshall says. “I emailed my colleagues, my new colleagues. And as a consequence of that I never really sent another informal email because I learnt very quickly I had to be much more careful.” Parker remembers that email. “It was vintage Dixie,” he says. “All brash and bold. It was all about how her first week in the office was like The West Wing, with lots of wizened old hacks with dodgy suits, and smart, hot young women, and then on a Friday they’d all have a drink and kiss each other, or something like that. “There were a few other similar memos over the years that made their way to journalists. They were just so juicy it was impossible to ignore and not have fun with it.” Does he think Marshall got a hard time because she was a woman in a powerful position? “I don’t know whether that’s true or not,” Parker says. “I didn’t necessarily see it that way from the outside but that’s been Dixie’s career. She was a trailblazer in sport and football and has always worn that proudly. “The only thing I would say is that Barnett’s two prior media directors — Cath Hart and Jo Webber — were also women and didn’t attract anywhere near the same amount of controversy or attention. I dealt with all of them well. I actually really like Dixie. We had our moments but we also could deal with each other with trust and mutual respect.” Barnett says there is no doubt Marshall had her detractors, in and outside of Parliament. “It’s fair to say she did rub some members of Parliament and some of the media up the wrong way,” Barnett says. “Maybe some members of Parliament were not used to dealing with such a strong woman, to be blunt. She was always going to attract attention in the media because of who she was, not the job she had at the time.” Public scrutiny aside, Marshall says her time in politics was some of the most thrilling of her professional life. “Every morning at 8.15 we would meet and we would review the crisis and catastrophe from the night before and then prepare for the day of crisis and catastrophe and that was just ongoing,” she says. “And it’s exciting right? You are the first person who hears if there has been a shark attack or the alleged serial killer gets arrested or there is going to be an announcement of a new hospital or what they’re going to call Elizabeth Quay. “That side of things is fantastic but the political side? That’s a blood sport. That’s the part that I couldn’t stomach. Imagine going to work when Parliament is sitting, and people are yelling abuse at you across that chamber, and then you get to your feet and you yell abuse back. Every single day, three times a week, 24 weeks a year. It’s just shocking.” Marshall says she was always open about her distaste for the, well, political side of politics. And despite working in the most powerful political office in WA, not to mention having some serious Liberal Party pedigree, her father, Arthur Marshall held the seats of Murray and then Dawesville for the party for 22 years, she says she has no plans to run for a seat herself — and never did. “(The politicians) were always very wary of me because I think that’s what they thought the reason I went into politics was,” she says. “It didn’t matter how many times I said ‘I have no interest in politics at all, I do not want a seat’, they didn’t believe me. So that wasn’t my club. The politicians were not my team. My team were the communications team.” That communications team became a powerful force under Marshall. She says the intensity of the job created a unique workplace culture of close friendships and fierce loyalty. “I used to try and explain to (husband and media manager at the Fremantle Dockers) Luke (Morfesse) what had happened during the day. I would get halfway through the first hour and I’d be like: ‘I can’t. There is no way I can tell you the whole thing that happened today because it would take hours to tell you anything.’ So you don’t tend to talk about it at home, or out because a lot of what you deal with is highly confidential and so you end up becoming a little cult. And that media team certainly felt like that.” Her other team was Team Barnett. She became close to the former premier, and says she feels it is a failing on her part that the public never got to know what she says is his “loyal and generous” side. However, she was aware long before the 2017 election defeat that things were not looking good. “The election was in March. We should have handed over, in my view, in September to Liza Harvey and Colin should have stepped away,” Marshall says. “Because clearly, people had had a gutful of him — or us. I actually spoke to him in September, I said ‘let’s go together, let’s get out’. We understood we were heading for a wipe out and it might help it not be such a wipe out.” Barnett insisted on staying, and Marshall said she couldn’t abandon the team months out from an election. “I had a job to go to but I couldn’t jump off and leave him there,” she says. “I certainly didn’t want to be seen to be jumping off a sinking ship, so given he wanted to stay, we all stayed. There were a number of my colleagues that felt the same: ‘it might be time to go’. But we stayed because he wanted to.” She says she does not miss politics, or journalism, but she is loving her new life in advertising “All those things I learnt as a 21-year-old cadet are still really valid as a 56-year old content creator, which is brilliant,” she says. And she can eat her Barbecue Shapes in peace.
