CCTV footage of a man firing shots into a home in Melbourne’s outer suburbs - seemingly filming the brazen act on his phone - has been released by police.
Shots were fired toward a home on Elmwood Place, Craigieburn about 1pm on October 24 last year.
Police have been unable to find the Land Rover involved because of the grainy CCTV footage, the shooter, or even the bullets - because the gunshots appear to have missed the house.
The CCTV footage was handed to police in January, but police have not obtained the shooter’s mobile phone footage.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Senior Constable Mitchell Jones would not confirm whether the shooting was a threat.
The house which was shot at is at a dead end of the street, and as far as police know there was no one home, or out walking along the suburban road.
“But it’s still reckless … someone could have potentially been there,” Senior Constable Jones said.
“It’s one o’clock (PM) on a Friday, there are plenty of people at their homes, who have gone home, or are staying home during the day; I’d describe it as reckless.”
Police have “have no information to suggest” the shooting is linked to Operation Eclipse - a police taskforce investigating a slew of arson attacks at dozens of Melbourne hospitality venues in recent months.
The Senior Constable also batted away a reporter’s question about the residents’ ‘Middle Eastern’ ethnicity and whether they were “known to police”.
“I’ve spoken to the people at that address, they’ve been fine to talk to me and discuss what’s happened,” Senior Constable Jones said.
“They’re obviously quite shocked and concerned about something that’s happened towards their house, but I can’t confirm any further details of them.
“And also I wouldn’t, just because given the nature of what’s occurred … I wouldn’t confirm anything in the terms of ages and stuff like that.”
Police only received the CCTV footage three months after the shooting - in January - with the lapse in time the reason police could not find the bullets.
“A lot of the time when these sorts of things happen we don’t immediately share the footage, but at this stage we’re looking for members of the public to come forward with any information that they might have, so hence why we share the footage,” the Senior Constable said.
“If you don’t want to talk to us or don’t feel comfortable talking to police, you’re more than welcome to contact Crime Stoppers.
“We’re looking for any information whether that’s people who know who committed this crime or who’s related to it or any of the circumstances.”
Footage shows a black Land Rover pull up near wheelie bins before a man wearing black shoes, black and grey tracksuit pants, a black hoodie and a balaclava steps out of the vehicle.
The man takes a few steps away from the car before he raises a gun in one hand and a phone in the other, seemingly filming as he fires at least three shots.
The person then gets back into the driver’s seat of Land Rover and speeds away.
