“In accordance with all deaths in custody, WA Police will prepare a report for a coronial inquiry,” a statement said.

The deceased man’s next of kin were advised.

When a person dies in police custody it is considered a “reportable death”. An inquest is then mandatory to examine the supervision, treatment and care of the deceased.

Since 1991, almost 500 Aboriginal people have died, either in the custody of police or in prison.
