New sporting facility enters $500,000 planning stage to deliver 10 indoor courts and outdoor hardcourts

Progress on a new regional sporting and recreation facility, known as Kwinana Regional Open Space, was made at last week’s City of Kwinana council meeting, with the feasibility study and business case both adopted by council. Planning, site investigations and initial design will now begin for the facility, which includes 10 indoor courts along with outdoor hardcourts for netball. Mayor Peter Feasey said Kwinana’s population growth was projected to rise by more than 33,000 residents by 2041, with a younger demographic profile driving strong demand for the 50ha sport and recreation infrastructure earmarked for Postans. “Children in this region are sometimes waiting three years to participate in basketball competitions due to a shortfall in court space,” Mr Feasey said. “This Regional Open Space facility has the potential within 10 years to help address the significant gap in infrastructure provision for our community.” The space is a high priority project for city investment, supported by neighbouring local governments also seeking to address deficits in playing fields. “Building sport and recreation options close to home are important for our community’s health and wellbeing,” Mr Feasey said. “High priority features considered as being needed within the next 10 years in phase one include the 10 indoor courts, a minimum of two Australian rules football ovals incorporating two diamonds, two cricket ovals with the capacity of providing for soccer/football, plus an initial hardcourt development for netball.” Phase two of the facility, to be completed in the next 10 to 20 years, proposes additional rectangular pitches for rugby, synthetic turf for hockey, a district level tennis facility and a criterium circuit. “In 20 years or more, in the third phase of the development, the site could look to accommodate an aquatic facility subject to need being demonstrated,” Mr Feasey said. The land in Postans and $500,000 to undertake planning was promised by Kwinana MLA Roger Cook at the 2025 State election.
