Derby’s Nicholson Oval is one step closer to being restored to full community use, with the awarding of a contract to replace the facility’s ageing lighting system.

The Shire of Derby-West Kimberley council approved the tender for the project, which will see a complete overhaul of the oval’s lighting infrastructure, at its April meeting.

The upgrade comes after growing concern from local sporting clubs and community members over the declining performance of the existing system.

The shire said the lights had progressively deteriorated in recent years, restricting evening training sessions, competitions and community events with many residents calling for a reliable, modern solution.

Kalamunda Electrics will now install a new energy-efficient system designed to meet contemporary sporting standards while improving reliability and performance.

Shire of Derby-West Kimberley chief executive Tamara Clarkson said the project represented a long-awaited outcome for the community.

“This is a highly anticipated outcome for our community,” she said.

“We understand how important this facility is for local sport and community recreation, and we are pleased to be moving ahead with a solution that will restore safe and reliable lighting to the oval.”

Construction is expected to be completed in early 2027.
