Two men are recovering in hospital after they survived a light plane crash around 50km north of Perth, sparking a major response from emergency services.
The incident occurred at around 10.20 on Saturday morning, when a single-engine light aircraft crashed near a private airfield shortly after take-off.
The crash happened off Brand Highway near Nolan Road, just north of the town of Muchea, around 50km north of Perth.
Two men, one in his 60s and another in his 30s, were on board the plane when the incident occurred.
One of the men was transported to Royal Perth Hospital by ambulance, while the other was flown in the rescue helicopter.
Both men are understood to be in stable conditions after suffering leg injuries.
The aeroplane sustained major damage in the crash, with the incident sparking a large response from emergency services.
Aside from police, DFES sent six primary vehicles and the rescue helicopter to the scene and remained on site for more than an hour before departing just after 11.45. Five crews from St John also attended the scene.
DFES Perth district officer Gareth Deeg said the incident was a complicated one on paper.
“It’s complex for a number of natures, the location, the information that’s provided, the fuel, the aircraft, what it’s made out of,” he said.
“There’s a number of features that put an incident like that into the complex category.”
Mr Deeg said crews were able to get the men out with relative ease.
“The crews upon arrival were able to classify it quite quickly and that allowed some of our DFES appliances to be stood down which weren’t required to attend the incident,” he said.
“The extraction of the two casualties was quite simple, however it was complex due to the location of the aircraft.”
Police inquiries into the cause of the crash are ongoing.
