Half a dozen kids left alone in a house had to be rescued by neighbours after a freak fire erupted and almost ended in tragedy in Perth’s south.

The blaze erupted before 8pm on Friday at a Yangebup home, with nearby residents rushing to the property and using a garden hose to attack the flames.

Nearby resident Michelle was joined by her son, Joel, who ran into the house to save the children.

“We went up to the driveway, and he just barged in to the house and into the smoke and that,” she said.

“All our concern was getting those kids out.”

Joel and another neighbour were also transported to hospital.

It’s understood a rug caught fire while the stove was being used, with the blaze being ruled accidental.

The six children were taken to hospital as a precaution. They were not injured.

A 38-year-old woman from Yangebup has been charged with count of failing to protect children from harm and will face court this week.

The Department of Communities told 7NEWS they did not comment on specific child protection matters, but added it was responsible for investigating incidents and could conduct risk assessments when required.
