WA Day celebrations will be moved to Perth Park in 2028 as part of a new public holiday calendar for West Aussies.

As of 2028, WA Day will move from the first Monday of June to the second Monday of November as part of an overhaul of the State’s public holiday calendar.

And Premier Roger Cook has already earmarked Perth Park as the destination for WA Day celebrations that year.

“Put the second Monday in November 2028 in your diaries. It’ll be our first WA Day public holiday in November, and we’ll mark the occasion with a huge party at Perth Park,” Mr Cook said.

This year’s WA Day celebrations were cancelled because of wild weather.

“The cancellation of WA Day festivities last week was disappointing but demonstrates yet again why moving that public holiday to the warmer months is a winner,” he said.

“It will allow even more West Aussies get out and about, enjoy the sunshine and celebrate our great State.”

Perth Park, near Optus Stadium and Crown Towers, will be home to an outdoor amphitheatre, a multi-storey function and sporting facility, bike tracks and a future hospitality venue — as well as include a new motorsports street circuit.

Expected to be completed late next year, the Park has come under heavy fire from the State Opposition which has questioned whether the $217 million price tag will stack up.

Opposition Leader Basil Zempilas says Perth Park — particularly the racetrack component — is an example of misplaced priorities by the Cook Government.

A decision to hold WA Day celebrations at Perth Park co-incides with changes to WA’s public holiday calendar which will also see Labour Day move to the second Monday in March in a move designed to have WA better align with other Australian states.

The King’s Birthday public holiday will be moved to the second Monday in June to also better align with other Australian states.

Easter Saturday will be recognised as a public holiday to align with all other Australian mainland states.

And there will be a new public holiday, Show Day, to be set by proclamation to coincide with the first Monday of the September/October school holidays.

The Public and Bank Holidays Amendment Bill 2025 is expected to be passed this year.

“My government is as committed as ever to making sure WA’s public holiday calendar works for Western Australians and reflects the way we live,” Mr Cook said.

“That’s why we’re overhauling our public holiday schedule — including adding two new public holidays for Easter Saturday and Show Day and moving WA Day to November.

“We hope the Bill will pass later this year, with all changes to take effect from 2028.”
