Western Australia’s best and worst Aldi, Coles and Woolworths supermarkets revealed

VideoMajor Australian supermarkets are launching their Christmas product ranges, with Coles introducing 158 new festive items including slow-cooked beef, spiral cut ham, Australian prawns and oysters.

WA shoppers have delivered their verdict on the State’s three major supermarket chains — with one store ranking among the nation’s best, while others in Perth and the Kimberley languish near the bottom.

Aldi has come out on top in WA for average Google ratings, edging Woolworths and Coles in a comparison of thousands of customer reviews.

But the best-rated individual supermarket in the State belongs to Woolworths, with its Perth Airport store earning 4.46 stars out of five.

At the other end of the rankings, Woolworths Cottesloe, Coles Kununurra and Aldi Mirrabooka were the lowest-rated stores in their respective chains.

The research by SEO Backlinks looked at Google ratings for supermarkets across the three major chains, with shoppers repeatedly praising clean stores, helpful staff and easy parking — and complaining about checkout queues, empty shelves and poor service.

Aldi wins the ratings battle

Aldi recorded the highest average rating in WA, with its 43 stores averaging 4.15 stars.

Woolworths was close behind on 4.10 stars across 106 stores, while Coles averaged 4.04 stars across 100 stores.

Despite leading the local comparison, WA was the lowest-rated State or Territory in which Aldi operates. Queensland had the highest average at 4.32 stars.

Aldi’s best-rated WA store was Northam, which scored 4.33 stars from 375 reviews.

One shopper described it as their “go to shop monthly as we live 160kms away”.

Byford Aldi was close behind on 4.32 stars, with a customer praising the “great shopping experience” and saying the fruit and vegetables were good and prices competitive.

Beeliar Aldi, rated 4.28 stars, also received praise for its staff.

“The staff here are always helpful and go out of their way. My favourite Aldi store,” one reviewer wrote.

But not every Aldi store delivered the same experience.

Mirrabooka was WA’s lowest-rated Aldi, with 3.96 stars from 760 reviews, making it the fifth-lowest-rated Aldi nationally.

Thornlie was next on 3.99 stars from 336 reviews, making it the ninth-worst nationally.

Checkout arrangements were a recurring frustration among shoppers.

At Mirrabooka, one reviewer said they were surprised there were no self-service checkouts.

At Thornlie, a shopper complained that items normally available at Aldi were missing and self-service checkouts were “always closed off”.

“Worst Aldi I’ve ever been to,” they wrote.

Other customers complained about queues and unavailable checkouts at Waikiki, Busselton, Southern River and Joondalup.

Woolworths has WA’s best individual store

Woolworths Perth Airport topped the WA rankings for all three supermarket chains, earning 4.46 stars from 589 reviews.

The result placed it third nationally among Woolworths stores.

Shoppers praised the store’s cleanliness, stock levels, layout and staff.

One reviewer described it as “always clean tidy lots of stock and clear aisles”, while praising employees for being friendly and extremely helpful.

Another said: “I have never had a bad experience at this store. Always well stocked, clean and tidy.”

The store’s spacious layout and carpark also earnt favourable mentions.

Woolworths Inglewood and Mt Pleasant were next in the WA rankings, both rated at 4.36 stars.

But Cottesloe was the chain’s lowest-rated WA store, with 3.76 stars from 270 reviews.

Complaints included the quality and range of fresh produce, as well as customer service.

One shopper said the “quality of fresh fruit and veg is poor and offerings limited”, adding that baked goods were sometimes frozen when displayed.

Another complained about waiting at the deli counter while staff failed to help, followed by finding no one at the customer service desk.

Warwick, rated 3.80 stars, and Booragoon, on 3.81, rounded out Woolworths’ three lowest-rated WA stores.

At Warwick, shoppers complained about rude or dismissive service, with one describing a staff member as “super rude” after asking for assistance.

Coles trails rivals in WA

Coles recorded the lowest average rating of the three chains in WA with 4.04 stars.

Its highest-rated WA store was Currambine with 4.34 stars from 271 reviews — enough to place it seventh nationally among 830 Coles stores.

One shopper praised the store’s “great produce in store with ample parking available”.

Albany Orana was the second-highest-rated Coles in WA on 4.28 stars.

“The staff are amazing, no matter how busy they are, they will stop and help you,” one customer wrote.

Tom Price, Northam, Byford and Busselton also featured among the chain’s top-rated WA stores.

Shoppers at those stores praised helpful staff, cleanliness, the range of products and parking.

Coles Kununurra was the chain’s lowest-rated WA store, scoring 3.72 stars from 701 reviews.

Checkout arrangements were a major gripe.

“No manned checkouts, prices don’t match at the self checkouts,” one shopper wrote.

Another said: “I can’t believe they have zero staffed checkouts.”

Narrogin and Brighton Butler were next-lowest, both on 3.76 stars.

At Brighton Butler, one reviewer complained that the shelves were in such poor order that it was difficult not to notice.

“The shelves are a mess, not something I’d normally even notice in a shop but that’s how bad it is,” they wrote.

Maylands, North Armadale and Gosnells also featured among Coles’ lowest-rated WA stores.

Their reviews included complaints about click-and-collect orders, limited choice, missing price labels and long waits for staffed checkouts.

At Gosnells, one shopper described customers waiting with full trolleys while only one register was operating near the kiosk.

What makes a supermarket stand out?

SEO Backlinks founder Oliver Weston said customer reviews showed that the shopping experience involved more than just prices.

“Most people choose a supermarket on price but the reviews show how much the store itself matters,” he said.

“At the bottom of the list, the same complaints come up again and again — one checkout open, self-serve checkouts switched off and gaps on the shelves.

“At the top, reviewers talk about easy parking, quick checkouts and staff who help.

“Aldi stores carry much the same range, so the difference between the best and the worst comes down to how each store is run.

“If you have more than one Aldi nearby, check the reviews before you do your weekly shop.”

Mr Weston said the close ratings between Coles and Woolworths meant the experience at an individual store could influence where shoppers chose to go.

“There’s not much between Coles and Woolworths on price, so for most people it comes down to which store is closest and how that store treats them,” he said.

“The stores at the top of the list are mostly newer and bigger, with plenty of parking, and the reviews keep mentioning clean aisles and friendly staff.

“Those reviews sit right under the store’s name when people search for a Coles near them, so a store that gets the basics right is winning shoppers before they’ve even left home.”

The research used Google Maps ratings collected on October 5, 2026, with Aldi stores rechecked on Tuesday, October 20.

It included open supermarkets with at least 200 reviews: 1044 Woolworths, 830 Coles and 545 Aldi stores nationally.

Ratings were calculated from individual one-to-five-star reviews and rounded to two decimal places, with each store weighted equally when calculating state averages.

Separate liquor and petrol outlets, online and distribution facilities, closed stores and duplicate listings were excluded.

The results reflect Google customer ratings, rather than an independent assessment of supermarket prices, product quality or service.
