When and where in Perth to see final Supermoon of 2025 as date revealed for first full moon of 2026
Australians are set to witness one last celestial spectacle for 2025, with the final full Supermoon of this year set to rise over WA on Friday night.
Known as the Cold Moon, the lunar event marks the third full Supermoon for the year, with the Moon sitting closer to Earth than usual — appearing bigger, brighter and sharper in Perth’s night sky.
Matt Woods from Perth Observatory says the event is part of a long tradition of naming moons after seasonal markers.
“The moons are named after certain seasons. Each moon has its own meaning, and a lot of the naming comes from North American traditions.”
Where to see the cold moon in Perth?
Sky watchers will be able to look up on Friday night and see the Supermoon starting at 7.55pm.
“You really need your own eyes — go out the front yard or the backyard and you’ll see it. “
The best places to see the moon are:
- Kings Park
- Matilda’s Bay
- Perth Hills
- Golden View Lookout
When will the next Supermoon be?
The Cold Moon is the final supermoon of 2025, but sky-lovers won’t have long to wait for the next big lunar moments.
“The next one is on January 3rd, and then we will see full moons again on November 24th and December 24th next year,” Woods said.
“We get three or four every year — so whilst they aren’t super rare, they’re still beautiful events worth stepping outside for.”
For those eager to capture the moment, Woods shared one simple tip.
“Have your camera on a tripod, reduce your exposure, and use your zoom to get right in on the moon, that’s how you get the best shot.”
